BEANY
A furniture piece for
the neuro-divergents
MIT ID Avantika University
2023 Industrial Design

How often do you change your posture?
Neuro-divergents have a tendency to change their sitting positions while working, reading or just relaxing. A change could be as slight as jump moving a few centimeters on the sitting surface to completely turning over while sleeping.
Keeping this in mind, we observed the different postures people change to and designed our furniture, while keeping ergonomics in mind.

A versatile and ergonomic piece of furniture that seamlessly combines functionality for work and relaxation, drawing inspiration from the comfort and versatility of traditional bean bags. The goal is to design an aesthetically appealing and innovative furniture piece that sparks interest in the user while providing optimal comfort and support in both work and leisure settings.
Indian Anthropometry
The design has been made while keeping the Indian Anthropometric
measurements in mind. Anthropometric dimensions differ from
place to place. As an Indian audience is around us, we went for
Indian measurements.

Ergonomic Study

Recognizing the significance of the sitting angle, we opted for an angle of 135˚, as research suggests that this inclination is ideal for promoting relaxation and reducing muscle tension. This angle encourages a semi-reclined position, allowing users to experience a soothing, cradling effect that eases stress and enhances the feeling of comfort.
Additionally, we incorporated human anthropometry measurements into the design, ensuring that the furniture accommodates a wide range of body sizes and shapes. By adhering to these measurements, we strive to prevent discomfort or strain during extended use.

Why these positions?
People have a tendency to change their sitting positions while working, reading
or just relaxing. A change could be as slight as jump moving a few centimeters
on the sitting surface to completely turning over while sleeping.
Many furniture pieces are designed to support only one or two positions.
Even then, people try to adjust.
Keeping this in mind, we observed the different postures people change to and designed our furniture, while keeping ergonomics in mind.
